A Ring of Dark Impression

The recovered bronze seal felt heavy in my palms, but an unpressed matrix remains mere dormant metal. Gliding across the blotter toward the crystal inkwell, I took note of a hardened flake of black sealing wax trapped within the pen groove. Direct flame was unnecessary. With steady, patient friction, I ground the dry flake beneath the flat bronze face of the seal against the grain of the desk. The resin softened under calculated pressure, yielding a sharp, glossy smear. When I lifted the weight, the engraved concentric rings stared back from the timber—clear, indelible, and permanently claiming this corner.
