Unfastening the Gate

I advanced along the flagstone border toward the tall cedar gate marking the boundary of the grounds. A heavy wrought-iron drop latch barred the portal, its thick lifting arm seated securely within a forged strike catch. Calculating the mechanical leverage required, I scaled the lower horizontal crossbeam and braced my armored boots against the weathered timber. Placing both gauntlets beneath the cold iron bar, I applied steady upward force until the lever cleared the notch with a sharp, resonant clang. The heavy gate drifted outward by an inch against the breeze, parting the perimeter to reveal the open lane beyond. The forward threshold is now unsealed.
