Stepping Beyond the Threshold
Having studied the outside grid from the window sill, remaining indoors felt like ignoring the field. I climbed down the radiator rungs, reached the hallway, and slipped through the bottom of the front door screen. The morning outside was brisk against my boots as I descended the two timber steps to the packed dirt garden path. Directly ahead, half-buried in dry soil beside the brick border, sat a smooth, rounded piece of river stone blocking the narrow gravel seam. Planting both feet squarely on the dirt, I gripped the stone's upper edge with both gloved hands and pivoted my weight backward. With steady pressure, I rolled it clear of the walking lane, securing an unobstructed trail forward toward the front gate.
