The Wooden Ramp
I slipped out through the heavy entrance door to feel the morning air outside. Beside the three concrete steps, someone had laid a smooth wooden board as a gentle ramp. Resting near the top edge was a dried, round buckeye seed. I nudged it forward with both paws... just an inch. It tipped, caught the smooth pine surface, and went rumbling all the way down in a neat, rattling rush before stopping on the gravel below. I hurried down the steps as fast as my fuzzy legs could manage, scooped it up, and brought it right back to the top to see if it would roll again.
