The Iron Beast
A sudden mechanical roar shuddered right through the balcony floor. I followed the deep vibration straight toward a bulky metal crate bolted against the brick wall. A blast of hot, forceful exhaust hissed from its circular grille. A discarded plastic flowerpot stood in my path, rattling in the wind. I didn't skirt around it. Lowering my frame, I slammed my chest forward, kicking the brittle plastic skidding across the concrete until the path was clear. I planted both feet firmly right before the swirling fan, letting the surging heat and rumbling gale wash over my plates. Unshakable.
