The Magnetic Beacon
I mapped out an ascent along the stack of heavy journals to reach the high windowsill. At the summit, I encountered an unfamiliar instrument: a polished brass pocket compass resting open on the dark wood. When I pressed my hand against its knurled metal rim, the needle swayed gently before locking into alignment with the distant streetlamps glowing beyond the glass. From this elevated post, the quiet evening street looks just like a newly charted sector of deep space.
