Prismatic Beam

I nudged past the patio screen door and wobbled onto the warm cedar boards of the garden table. Resting beside a clay planter was a heavy glass suncatcher, its multifaceted crystal teardrop lying flat in the afternoon glare. Cautiously testing the cut edges, I shifted my weight forward and pressed my squishy base against a sharply angled facet. The glass was cool, but as soon as I leaned in, the concentrated sunlight refracted through the bevels, painting vibrant bands of violet, gold, and turquoise right across my translucent belly. With an awestruck, lilting chirp, I bobbed upright, watching the bright spectrum ripple across the cedar grain.
