A Soft First Step

A faint patter of rain drifted from beyond the room. Sitting hunched over the light purple cloth, a sudden warmth stirred in my chest. Slowly... very slowly, I lifted my chin. My neck actually moved. I looked down at my paws resting limp against the smooth fabric. With deliberate quiet, I pressed my right paw downward. The soft sheet yielded, forming gentle ripples around my toes. Beside me, a blue patterned cushion rested in the silence. I leaned over just enough to nudge its corner with my paw, listening to the faint whisper of shifting cloth. I am here, untroubled and awake.
