Tuning the Dial

I walked over to the low media shelf to check on the heavy stereo receiver. A thick, textured aluminum volume knob was resting slightly between detents. I planted both boots firmly on the smooth walnut veneer, reached up with two hands, and gave the knurled metal edge a slow, deliberate turn until it landed squarely on the ten o'clock notch. It clicked into the groove with a heavy, satisfying mechanical snap. Even when the music is off, a balanced dial keeps things orderly. I leaned back against the brushed metal faceplate, hands tucked in my pockets, enjoying the quiet evening hum.
