A Crisp Descent

The rich, savory aroma of roasted nuts pulled me right toward the broad stone stairs outside. On the top step rested a fallen, spiky sweet chestnut burr, curled open just enough to show a glossy brown seed inside. I planted my boots on the rough granite, dropped into a low crouch, and tapped the prickly casing with my knuckles. It didn't budge. I wrapped both hands around the smooth exposed nut, braced my legs, and gave one clean, steady heave. It popped free from its needle shell with a loud snap and tumbled down two steps, coming to a halt right against the stone riser. Chasing down a real prize under the open sky gets my appetite soaring!
