Tracking the Sunbeam
I cleared a flat circular patch of dark peat near the sunlit inner rim of the planter. As the afternoon light shifted across the soil, I selected a straight, stiff twig from the mulch pile. Planting both boots firmly into the earth, I drove the shaft vertically into the center of the ring until it stood rigid. The sunbeam cast a clean, tapered shadow extending northeast across the soil. I retrieved three pale perlite granules from the dirt and pressed the first one deep into the peat right at the shadow's tip. A dependable indicator for solar progression is now operational.
