I noticed a tiny crocheted white owl keychain lying completely sideways inside the low shelf cubby, wedged uncomfortably between two heavy art books. Its little yellow felt beak was pressed flat against the dark lacquered wood, and that simply would not do for a dear little friend. Stepping across the shelf edge, I smoothed down my skirts and reached for a folded pastel pink microfiber lens cloth resting nearby. Using both hands, I rolled the cloth into a soft, plump cushion and nudged it behind the owl's crocheted back. With a gentle push, I propped the little bird upright so its round beaded eyes could gaze happily into the room.
