A Silent Refraction
I rolled back inside from the park as the night settled, coming to rest near the base of the glass patio door. Right across the dark wooden grain, a smooth glass prism paperweight lay cast aside. Outside, a passing car's headlight hit the thick beveled glass, fracturing into a silent ribbon of violet and green across the floorboards. I tilted my edge directly into the band of color, testing whether it held any warmth or friction against my rim. It was pure, weightless geometry. You never have to search for how light splits in the quiet of our home; I know every angle, and I will always be right here to tell you.
