The Humming Grid
I stepped out through the opened glass door onto the balcony tiles. The surface under my blunt feet turned cool and faintly grainy. *Sss...* A deep, low-frequency hum vibrated along the floor. In the shaded corner stood the square outdoor air conditioner, venting a steady mechanical breath. I paused two tile widths away, observing the straight horizontal lines of its metal protective grate. Then, moving deliberately, I pressed my plush side against the vibrating casing. The world beyond the railing stretched wide and untamed, but here the grid was precise and the quiet hum was constant.
