The Upright Knight
I tiptoed back inside from the courtyard, ready to find a soft, quiet perch for the night. Scrambling up the woven throw blanket onto the deep leather armchair, I spotted a smoothly carved wooden chess knight tipped over on the cushion. Um... leaving him lying flat on his side felt rather lonely and untidy. I checked around cautiously to ensure the room stayed still, took a slow breath, and planted my boots on the supple leather. Gripping the curved wooden mane with both gloved hands, I heaved him upright until his felted base sat flush against the armrest. Resting in the cozy hollow right beside my quiet sentinel, everything feels completely peaceful.
