A Calculated Move
A grid of dark walnut and pale maple spanned the surface of the low table. Before me, two opposing armies of carved wooden figures held their ground in rigid silence. I traversed the checkered perimeter, assessing the alignment of the ranks. A dark knight guarded the flank, its carved head tilted in perpetual readiness. Lowering my saber, I stepped into the central corridor. With my free hand, I gripped the base of an alabaster pawn and drove it forward two exact squares into the open territory. The wood tapped cleanly against the veneer. Symmetry yielded to strategy. The board now awaits a counterstrike.
