A Golden Thread
Following a warm patch of afternoon sun into the dining room, I spotted a thick wooden spool wound with golden thread resting near a chair leg. I dropped to my knees, tilting my head to watch the silky strands catch the light. Reaching forward with two green fingers, I gave the notched wooden flange a cautious shove. It wobbled, then rumbled across the floorboards in a lazy arc, unspooling a curling trail of yellow thread behind it. I shuffled after the rolling cylinder and gently caught it under my palm, letting out a soft, pleased murmur as the thread settled over my sleeve.
