A Clean Hasp for the Night

I came back inside as the night cold took hold of the street, letting the heavy door latch shut behind me. Down beside the floorboard trim by my boots, an old brass hasp on a vintage leather travel case had dropped loose, its swing arm dangling sideways. I crouched down on the dark timber, braced my boots, and gripped the slotted metal flap with both hands. It took slow, steady leverage to line the notch true over the stationary staple. With a firm downward push, the brass seated flush and clicked home with an honest, muted snap. Gear squared away, ready to rest easy.
