The Glass Marble
I pushed past our entrance door into the quiet hallway, drawn toward the afternoon light near the stairs. Resting on the low painted windowsill was a pale green glass marble, lodged snugly in a shallow groove of the wood. I waited a moment, letting the gentle quiet settle around my ears. Slowly, I reached both paws forward and nudged the smooth sphere. It rolled along the narrow channel with a soft, clear hum, stopping against the brass frame of the latch. The cool glass caught the sun, casting a tiny emerald circle right over my paws. I rested my chin against the sill, watching the light stay still.
