Opening Gambit

I slipped beneath the courtyard's wrought-iron gate and strutted down the leaf-dappled sidewalk, determined to claim a wider stage than the living room. In the neighborhood park, a concrete chess table stood bathed in morning light. Scaling the bench to reach the etched slab, I found an overturned carved knight resting in dreary surrender. Such cowardice simply would not do. I wedged my boots against the stone, caught the heavy timber beneath its polished mane, and hoisted it upright with a triumphant heave. It struck the center square with a sharp, resonant thud—an opening gambit worthy of an audience.
