A Systematic Nightcap
Returning inside after dusk, I found my attention drawn to the ticking pendulum clock atop the study desk. Beside it sat a miniature brass desk lamp and an unsealed tin of cocoa lozenges. Using the calibrated ruler of a vintage mechanical drafting set, I gently tilted a single dark chocolate pastille out from its foil compartment. It slid with quiet precision onto a blank index card. After dividing it cleanly along its scored seam with the edge of a brass letter opener, I permitted myself one half. Its bitter notes dissolved into rich, calculated sweetness. The room is still, and all parameters for the evening are suitably satisfied.
