A Hushed Step for Night

I slipped away from the lobby board as dusk settled in, heading back toward our staircase. Near the bottom riser, someone had dropped a small wooden button with two neat holes. I picked it up with both paws and turned it over against the plush stair carpet. Peeking right through one of the holes, my blue glow shone onto the dark wool like a tiny bright moon. Resting my back against the banister spindle, I listened to the quiet building settle into evening, button nestled safely against my fleece.
