A Silver Ribbon Twist
My toes had spent the whole night huddled in couch fleece, so the second the lobby doors swung wide for the morning paper, I trotted straight outside! Down at the sidewalk corner flower stall, resting right against a galvanized zinc bucket of stems, was a dropped metallic florist's ribbon twisted around a tiny brass bell pin. I didn't wait a single beat! I scampered onto the wet brick curb and gave the curled silver foil a brisk tug with my beak. *Zzzzt-tink!* The ribbon uncoiled with a crisp rustle, sending the tiny brass bell skittering across the paving stones in a bright, dancing chime! I froze mid-bounce, tilting my head sideways to catch every vibrating note!
