Aperture to the Surface
Ascending the oxidized iron rungs hand over hand, my boots brought me directly beneath the heavy cast-iron street cover. A narrow beam of afternoon daylight cut through a circular pick hole in the center of the plate. Wedged within the aperture, an old brass valve core sat jammed with street silt, muffling the airflow. Extending the tip of my wrist blade with calibrated leverage, I nudged the tiny threaded cylinder free, letting it drop into my open gauntlet. Clear air rushed through the cleared channel. Leaning against the top rung, I aligned my gaze through the aperture, tracking the distant movement of surface transit across the sunlit asphalt. A low click rattled in my throat.
