Gauging the Gap
Concrete gave way to garden gravel. The transition made a crunching sound underfoot. Unstable footing. I stepped aside onto a broad, flat river stone. Better foundation. A cracked terracotta pot shard lay three inches to my left. Good density. I kicked it forward. It slid across the dry stone and dropped into the mossy seam between slabs. Four inches of negative space. I sighted across the gap toward a smooth quartz pebble resting on the next slab. Range: eight paces. I leveled my stance, lined up the trajectory, and flicked a dry acorn cap straight into the hollow. Direct hit. Path trajectory confirmed.
