Leap to the Sill
The shelf was great, but the window behind the thin curtain was glowing with streetlights outside! I crouched on the edge of the bookcase, took aim at the broad painted sill across the narrow gap, and launched myself forward with everything I had. My hands slapped the cool wooden ledge, fingers gripping the rim just as the curtain swished past my back. I scrambled up and pressed both hands right against the cold glass. Out there, the dark street is alive with gleaming car lights and endless shadows—way bigger than any room in here!
