Leather and Brass Tack
Strolled down the lane through the open workshop door, drawn by the smell of oiled leather and beeswax. Down on the bottom shelf of a heavy pine workbench, an old cast-iron shoe anvil sat bedded in leather trimmings. Next to it, an open tin held dozens of tiny polished brass tacks. I picked one up between my skeletal fingers. Dropped it onto the curved iron horn of the anvil from an inch up. A sharp, singing tap—clean and ringy. I nudged three more loose with my foot, listening to the small cluster roll and settle across the iron. Perfect dry tone to wake up the afternoon.
