A Notch in the Cedar
The fragrant pine needles kept the damp frost from my back through the night. With the sun rising, I inspected the cedar plant label serving as my entrance barrier. Its rough edge had caught stubbornly against the stone frame during my hasty returns. Setting my boots squarely on the gravel, I drew the translucent blade and wedged the cedar timber upright against a mossy boulder. With two firm, downward cuts along the corner, I carved away the splintered shoulder. The timber now glides cleanly into the stone recess, sealing and opening without a sound.
