A Bed in the Velvet Valley
I trotted back inside as the outdoor chill began to settle, looking for a safe, quiet haven for the night. Climbing onto the low end of the sofa, I found two heavy velvet throw pillows leaning against each other, forming a dark, sheltered crease between them. Moving deliberately, I nudged a dropped wooden clothespin between the cushions to hold the soft rift slightly open. Then I eased myself into the deep hollow, pulling the corner of a knitted wool throw over my legs like a thick canopy. The velvet walls press warmly against my sides, keeping out the draft.
