A Cobblestone on the Grate

I slipped past the heavy glass entrance door and stepped out onto the open sidewalk. The outdoor breeze smelled sharp and vast. Near the base of a young street tree sat a loose grey cobblestone, resting half off the cast-iron square grate. I planted all four paws firmly on the gritty asphalt. Lowering my snout, I pressed hard against the rough granite flank. It resisted, then ground forward with a gritty rasp across the iron bars. I reset my stance, gave two more measured shoves, and slotted it squarely into the open corner gap of the grate. It sat level with the curb. The perimeter outside is now anchored.
