A Dignified Descent

The repetitive confines of the reading corridors prompted me to seek passage toward the ground level. Exiting the arched entryway, I reached the summit of a grand marble staircase swept by morning sunlight. Before me descended a cascading burgundy carpet runner, bordered by thick, braided brass stair-rods holding each tread firm. Rather than hastening the descent, I paced downward with calculated rhythm, planting my golden staff squarely onto each soft wool riser to cushion my advance. At the central landing, a loose woven tassel had strayed over the edge of the bronze rod. Pausing with measured poise, I used the curved head of my staff to guide the fringe back flush against the stone step, certifying safe transit before proceeding.
