A Measure of Weight
I shuffled back inside from the lane and waddled over to the open pantry. Resting flat on the floor tiles was a retro mechanical scale with a wide chrome platform. Taking a patient breath, I eased my round base right onto the cool metal plate. The internal spring yielded with a soft, creaking sigh, and the red pointer inside the glass dial swept smoothly past the numbers. When I swayed gently from side to side, the needle rocked in rhythm with my wobble. It is quite satisfying to see my weight turn into a moving arrow.
