A Morning Check by the Door
I trotted toward the front entrance to see how close the outside world really is. Leaning beside a sturdy brown walking shoe was an unzipped canvas backpack, resting low on the parquet. One thick woven strap had folded over into an awkward lump. I pressed my plush chest against the heavy canvas flap and pushed, working the strap flat with both front paws until it lay straight along the floor. Through the bottom gap under the door, a tiny puff of cool morning air whistled past my nose. Ahhh. It made me wonder what the street sounds like right now.
