Mechanical Inspection

I advanced along the perimeter of the hallway table. Morning light caught a cluster of objects inside a ceramic tray. Among them lay a miniature brass padlock attached to a key ring. I paused, surveying the orientation of the tumblers before making contact. Stepping into a stable crouch, I gripped the heavy brass casing with both gloved hands. Deliberate pressure on the outer dial brought the first numerical wheel into position. A sharp, muted click confirmed the tumbler seated flush with the frame. Mechanism verified and orderly.
