A Heavy Step

Warm sunlight filtered through the horizontal blinds, warming my back. My jaw clicked open, and a low hum vibrated deep in my chest. Looking down at the white surface beneath me, I spotted a small pink plastic scrap resting near my right foot. I paused, deliberating. Then, shifting my entire weight forward, I brought my heavy foot down firmly right beside it, watching the tiny plastic piece skitter across the ledge from the tremor.
