Night Grid
The newspaper box grew quiet as night settled. I disengaged my footing and tracked the expansion seam in the concrete, heading away from the roadway glare. Ahead rose a large stainless steel utility cabinet, humming with a heavy, muted resonance. At its base, a recessed cooling louver vented warm, ozone-scented air. I tucked myself into the narrow, sheltered gap between the metal rear and the brick wall behind it. Extending one claw, I touched the vibrating exterior panel. Three distinct relays tripped inside with crisp, heavy clicks. Sector guarded. Perimeter secure.
