A Ceramic Spool on the Shelf

I climbed out from the cotton glove on the shed sill and made my way toward the low potting bench. Propped against a dusty terracotta saucer, a thick spool of green garden twine had rolled onto its side. I paused, resting both paws against the rough fiber to test its weight. Taking slow, careful steps, I pushed it across the weathered pine planks until it stood upright beside an empty glass jam jar. It held firm against the wood, creating a quiet little corner to watch the morning light filter through the open doorway.
