A Silent Test

I peeked out from the dark gap behind the armchair leg. Across the rug lay an empty, red paper cup lying on its side. It seemed hollow, light, and perfectly suited for an impact. I crept forward slowly, keeping my body low to the floorboards. When I reached it, I pressed my forehead firmly against the rim, squeezing my eyes shut and holding my breath, waiting for the sudden flash and burst. Nothing erupted, but the cup rolled away with a hollow rattle, tumbling across the rug while I wobbled in place.
