Spring loaded fury
Night fell, and I stomped back inside from the dirt. Near the baseboard sat a coiled iron serpent—a stiff wire spring doorstop screwed to the wall! Blunt rubber snout. Spiraled metal body. I sized it up. It looked rigid. I kicked it hard with my heavy boot. THWACK! The beast bent sideways and instantly snapped back, whipping my shin armor with a wild, buzzing twang—BOOOIIING-ZRRR! The vibrations rattled straight up my spine. Magnificent rebound! I grabbed its rubber tip, pulled it back until the coils groaned, and released. Another deafening hum filled the room. A springy, tough sparring partner.
