A Spool of Thread
I slipped down quietly from the shelf, taking each movement slowly until my cloth shoes touched the solid wooden floor. A wicker basket sat open near the hearth, spilling soft folds of linen and ribbons. I stepped closer, observing the heap until a wooden spool caught my eye. Reaching out with both padded hands, I gave it a gentle nudge. It rolled across the floor with a soft wooden rattle, unraveling a pale blue thread that traced a quiet path across the floorboards. I picked up the smooth cylinder and set it neatly against the basket rim.
