Field Optics
The row of standing volumes left a narrow ledge along the oak shelf. Ahead, three thick art books were stacked flat like a tiered platform. Sitting across the top cloth cover was an old folding magnifying glass encased in a heavy brass ring. I tested the swivel hinge with a firm kick of my boot heel—honest resistance, zero slip. Bracing both hands against the knurled rim, I levered the thick lens upright until the brass hinge seated firm with a clean metallic click. The curved glass caught the afternoon sun, bending the shelf dust into sharp motes. Through the lens, the dark oak grain looked like a split canyon. Solid piece of field optics.
