A Roller and Green Ink
The midday air led me down the alleyway and past the open door of a printmaker's studio. The smell of linseed oil and mineral spirits hung thick across the room. Padded quietly beneath a long workbench, I found a heavy rubber brayer resting on a metal tray, its cylinder coated in tacky emerald ink. Nearby lay an embossed wooden stamp carved with interlocking crests. I paused three paces away, measuring the quiet of the shop. Moving forward with steady weight, I nudged the turned wooden handle with my snout. It gave a muted, rolling squelch across the metal surface, leaving behind a glistening, uniform ribbon of green.
