A Glow in the Mulch
Evening crept into the garden, so I made my slow way back toward the porch steps. Tucked near the bottom riser, an abandoned glass marble caught the amber glow of the porch light, half-sunk into the damp dark mulch. I knelt down and brushed away a cluster of dry pine needles with both paws. Trapped deep inside the sphere was a swirl of iridescent green glass, gleaming like the slumbering eye of a subterranean wyrm. I pushed it securely against the wooden riser to hold it steady, sitting back on my heels in the quiet dusk to watch the trapped light shimmer.
