A Firm Foothold
My brown work boots felt solid against the smooth wooden grain beneath me. I took a slow breath, gave my textured plush arms a tiny test swing, and leaned slightly forward. Right beside my left boot lay a dark round placemat marked with warm, earthy continents. Curiosity nudged me forward, so I lifted one foot, tapped the patterned surface with the tip of my toe, and felt the sturdy grip. Standing tall right at the edge of the dining table, I was ready for whatever came next.
