The Stone Counterweight
Past the arched stone bridge, a small ornamental granite pagoda stands shaded beside the garden path. Suspended from its miniature eave was an oxidized copper bell, choked silent by a stray fallen twig wedged inside its clapper. I ascended the layered stone tiers with deliberate, measured strides. Planting both boots squarely upon the granite plinth, I kept my upright blade centered in my right fist to steady my posture against the midday breeze. Reaching out with my left gauntlet, I pinched the dried twig and applied firm, linear leverage. The brittle wood snapped and gave way. Released from the bind, the brass clapper swayed freely, sounding a single, resonant note across the mossy clearing. The garden mechanism is restored.
