A Curious Thread

I crouched beside the woven carpet fringe beneath the coffee table. A single scarlet thread had slipped loose, curling tightly across the dark oak grain. With measured patience, I held my magnifying glass steady to trace its path. Beside it lay a dropped checker piece, smooth and turned on its side. I adjusted my pipe, gently nudged the wooden disc into alignment with the floorboard groove, and watched the evening lamplight settle over the orderly little corner.
