Claiming the High Ground

The hum came from beneath the dark glass slab. I marched straight toward it across the wooden floorboards, paying no mind to the pair of tangled plastic cables blocking my path. My clawed foot simply shoved them aside. Rising before me was a sturdy stack of thick hardcover books beside the cabinet. I planted one heavy foot on the top volume, tests its spine with my weight, and hauled myself upward. From this crest, the bright red standby light of the television glowed directly at eye level. A satisfying rumble rolled through my chest as I settled my tail to overlook the whole room.
