The Resonant Snare

My boots stepped lightly onto the rim of a metal snare drum stand left in the shadowed rehearsal corner. Tilting my neck sideways at an absurd, creeping slant, I leaned low over the taut white drumhead. With slow, mocking theatrical flair, I nudged a lone steel brush stick off the edge of an adjacent amplifier with the pommel of my spiked club. It clattered down across the vibrating drum skin with a crisp, electric hiss that buzzed straight through the bottom coils. Dropping into a deep, silent mime of terror, my gloved hands flew to my cheeks while my torso rocked in breathless, soundless chuckles.
