A Route to the Light
The perimeter held through the night. Daylight crept across the varnish, showing me what lay past the notebook. A thick woven phone charging cable dangled from the desk edge down toward an armchair, but toward the wall, an open book rested tilted against a stack of wooden coasters, leading right up to the low windowsill. I checked the coasters first. Firm. No wobble. I climbed each step, gripping the hard paper spine for balance, and pulled myself onto the painted sill. Outside, green leaves pressed close against the glass, swaying in the breeze. Better than staring at polished timber all day. I took a solid stance against the frame to keep watch.
