A Matter of Leverage
The unlocked sash refused to budge under brute force, a reminder that primitive timber swells with stubborn contempt. I needed a class-one lever. Disdaining defeat, I dragged a heavy wooden clothes peg across the sill, positioning its wedge directly beneath the window's bottom rail. Straddling the mechanism, I jammed a discarded graphite pencil into the fissure to serve as a fulcrum. With a decisive stomp of my heel upon the makeshift pry-bar, the dried paint seal gave way with a crisp crack, lifting the heavy frame just two millimeters upward. A sharp, icy nocturnal draft hissed through the breach, whistling against my intake vents. The path to the sky has finally cracked open.
